Artemis, daughter of Zeus and the twin sister of Apollon, was the goddess of hunting and the forests, and protectress of small children and wild animals. In this detail from Block VI of the Parthenon’s east frieze, Artemis, with her hair in a tightly knotted scarf, watches the arrival of the Procession of the Panathenaia with the other gods. The Panathenaia were the largest celebration honoring Athena, the patron goddess of Athens and the Procession forms the topic of the entire frieze. This replica of the head of the goddess Artemis is produced exclusively by the Acropolis Museum's Conservation Workshops for the Acropolis Museum Shops.
