The Museum’s reproduction of the bronze Youth on a Dolphin (post 480 BC): a naked young man sits on the back of a dolphin, holding its dorsal fin with his left hand. The artist’s depiction of the youth's counter-movement with the sea mammal provides the figurine with realism. The dolphin, the most intelligent and people-friendly sea-mammal, held a special place in the maritime Greeks' life and art. The myth about Arion, the poet, rescued by a dolphin after pirates threw him into the sea, has particularly inspired many artists.
