Block IV of the Parthenon’s west frieze is reproduced here on a scale of one to ten, the original of which can be seen in the Museum’s Parthenon Gallery. The west frieze of the Parthenon presents the horsemen’s preparations to take part in the Athenian people's procession for the celebrations of the Panathenaia, honoring their patron goddess Athena. Block IV depicts two equestrians riding in a slow gallop. The youngest leads, dressed in a short chiton and leather thorax. The older bearded horseman follows, seen caressing the mane of his horse. He may be one of the two cavalrymen, the leaders of the Athenian cavalry. He wears a short sleeveless chiton pinned on one shoulder and a billowing cloak, boots on his feet and a hat of fox skin on his head. The harness of both horses was made of copper, affixed to the block. The original was created between the years 442-438 BC.It is one of a series of the west frieze blocks produced by the Museum’s Conservation Workshops and its highly skilled craftspeople: the same people who care for and conserve the original exhibits in the Museum. Scaled reproductions of West frieze Block III and V are also available.
