Gorgon is the name given to the severed head of the mythical Medusa Gorgos, the legendary monster that the hero Perseus killed. Perseus handed it to the goddess Athena, who placed it on her aegis, the protective leather breastplate she wore to terrorize her opponents. In art, the gorgon is depicted as an emblem of the goddess' shield or alone as a symbol to ward off evil. This particular gorgon decorates the aegis of the statue of Athena dedicated to the Acropolis around 510 BC. This replica is produced by the skilled conservators of the Museum's workshops, assuring the highest quality, and is exclusive to the Acropolis Museum Shops.
