This is perhaps the best-preserved portrait of Alexander the Great in the world. The future commander with the bushy, lion-like hair is depicted at a young age, as he would have been at the time of his visit to Athens in 338 BC. Two years later, aged twenty, he ascended to the throne of Macedonia. In his thirteen-year reign, he conquered most of the then known world and brought the peoples of the East in contact with the culture and art of ancient Greece. This Museum replica has been made by the skilled craftspeople of the Acropolis Museum Conservation Workshop using the best of materials and techniques, assuring this fine copy of the highest standard.
