The famous Peplos Kore holds a special place amongst the Acropolis Korai, the statues of young girls that wealthy Athenians dedicated to the goddess Athena. A work of 535-525 BC, this Kore owes her name to the garment she wears, the peplos, a heavy woolen fabric folded at its top section. It is held at the waist with a belt, and at the shoulders with metal pins fixed on the small holes that remain on the statue. She wears a severe dress but as confirmed by specialized analysis, it is richly decorated with floral and geometric patterns on its edgings and animals, birds and horse riders on its front section. Many believe that the Peplos Kore is not like other Korai, but may represent Artemis, the goddess of hunting. It is thought that the Kore once held a bow and arrow in her hands, now lost. This Museum replica of the Peplos Kore is the product of the Acropolis Museum Conservation Workshops' detailed work. The combination of highly skilled craftsmanship and quality materials results in this excellent copy of an ancient masterpiece.
