This naked boy, standing with his right leg bent and his hair wrapped tightly around a band, is one of the most important works of ancient Greek art. The sculpture is thought to be the creation of the famous sculptor Kritios, to whom the sculpture owes its contemporary name. It is the most emblematic work of the so-called Severe Period, which developed after the Persian Wars of 480 BC. It was dedicated at the Acropolis around 480-470 BC. and probably represented a young athlete, a winner in a competition of the celebrations of the Great Panathenaia. Some believe the sculpture represents the mythical figure Theseus, the most important hero of Athens. This beautiful Museum replica is the product of the work of the skilled craftspeople of the Acropolis Museum Conservation Workshops using materials of the highest standard.
