In democratic Athens of the 5th century BC, the most important decrees that were the decisions voted upon by the assembly of the citizens, or the so-called Ekklesia of the Demos were carved on stone slabs. The slabs or steles were erected in popular public places where they could be seen. In this stele from the Acropolis, three decrees are recorded in which Athens provides privileges to its ally, the island of Samos. In this way, Athens recognized the faith and loyalty that Samos demonstrated when other allied cities deserted after the defeat of the Athenian fleet by Sparta in 405 BC.
