Although the Hekatompedon no longer exists, large sculptures and architectural pieces found on the Acropolis attest to its existence. This temple was built on the Acropolis around 570 BC, on the same site as the later, classical Parthenon. Four sculptures of horses, each about half a meter in height, were once part of a composition in which they drew a carriage. They originally decorated a metope of the Hekatompedon, the rectangular panels that run around the outside of a doric temple's exterior colonnade.
