The lekanis were luxurious shallow bowl-shaped containers with impressively decorated lids in which women stored their jewelry or cosmetics and were frequently given as wedding gifts. The Dionysian scene decorating the early 4th century lekanis lid of the Acropolis shows nine young women (Maenads) dancing in ecstasy and playing music around the god of wine and theater, Dionysus, accompanied by five winged Cupids and a Satyr.
