Who were the young women represented in the statues of young women, the korai that stood in the open air on the Athenian Acropolis? While that remains unknown, they were undoubtedly intended as expensive dedications from wealthy Athenian families to the goddess Athena. Exceptional amongst the korai is the Peplos Kore, named for the robe she wears, the peplos. Made of heavy woolen fabric, the peplos was caught at the shoulders with pins (fibulas) and held at the waist with a belt. Analysis of the traces of color surviving on the statue indicates that the peplos was white, with its middle frontal section decorated with vertical rows of small animals and bird figures and horse riders. The Peplos Kore is one of the few korai for which the identity is relatively certain. She represents a goddess, most likely Artemis, Protectress of the hunt and small animals, and it is thought that would have originally held a bow and arrow in her hands.
