The Karyatids were six statues of young women that supported, in place of columns, the roof of the south balcony of the Erechtheion temple, the temple of Athena Polias. Their beautiful hair with its intricate styling served a practical function: reinforced their necks, the weakest part of the statues, to carry the roof’s weight. Much is written about the Karyatids, but who they represent remains unknown. Today many scholars believe they were choreophoroi, dedicants offering libations, that is liquid dedications, to the mythical King Kekrops, the tomb of which was found below the shelter of the porch of the Erechtheion.
