One of the most famous works of the Acropolis, the marble relief of the Pensive Athena, depicts the patron goddess and protectress of Athens in front of a stele, leaning casually on her spear with one hand, the other resting on her hip. She wears an Attic helmet with a high plume and openings for her eyes and mouth. Covering her body is a peplos, a heavy woolen garment pinned at the shoulders and tied at the waist with a belt. This ancient garment was abandoned in the 6th century BC and reappeared in the following century.
