This is an impressive ceramic reproduction of an original fragment from an early fourth century red-figure loutrophoros. The loutrophoroi were special vessels in which water was carried for the bride and groom’s ritual cleansing bath on the eve of their wedding ceremony. The fragment depicts the bride and groom’s first encounter. A ceramic stand for the display of the reproduction is included and comes to you with the reproduction in a gift box.
Material: Ceramic
Designer: Maria Kakia / Attikon Fos
Dimensions: 17,5 x 11,4 x 4,3 cm
Ceramic base included.
The fragment depicts the couple’s first encounter directly after their wedding. The groom extends his hand to the bride, perhaps intending to hold her wrist and lead her to his paternal home. It is a typical wedding gesture that declares that the young woman is now officially passing from her father’s protection to that of her husband. Excavators found it with hundreds of others in the Sanctuary of the Nymphe, the protectress of marriage. The Sanctuary is located on the southern slope of the Acropolis not far from the Acropolis Museum.
