This ornamental ceramic draws its inspiration from a phormiskos, the leather or fabric pouch in which children carried their toys in ancient Athens. A colored woolen tassel is a contemporary addition.

The phormiskoi were cloth or leather bags in which children stored their small items such as knucklebones and other toys, as well as dried fruits and nuts. The ceramic forms imitated the real phormiskoi and were often dedicated by their owners to sanctuaries. Exhibit NA 1957 Aα 2441 was dedicated to the sanctuary of the Nymphe on the southern slope of the Acropolis. At its top, it has a hole through which a rope or cord could be passed, enabling it to be suspended in the Sanctuary. The original can now be seen in display case 6 of the Museum’s ground floor gallery of the Acropolis Slopes.
