This unusual phiale belongs to the category of Phiale Mesomphalos. These phialae have a round attachment at their base, making them more comfortable to hold. Usually made of metal and more rarely of clay, they were intended mainly for the liquid offerings of wine, oil, honey, milk and holy water to the sanctuaries of gods. The original was found in the Sanctuary of Nymphe on the southern slope of the Acropolis. It dates to the end of the 6th century BC and can be seen in display case 6 of the Museum’s gallery of the Acropolis Slopes.
