The world of the children of ancient Athens comes to life through the ceramic toys recovered in archaeological excavations at the sanctuary of Nymphe on the southern slope of the Acropolis. Some of these would likely have been dedicated at the Sanctuary by young women on the eve of their weddings, symbolic of their leaving the carefree years of childhood behind. The originals on which these copies are based date back to the sixth century BC and can be seen in display case 6 of the Museum’s gallery of the Acropolis Slopes.
