Six marble maidens, the famous Karyatids with their beautiful hairstyles, once stood on the Acropolis. Instead of columns, they held up the roof of the balcony of the Erechtheion, the sanctuary of the goddess Athena Polias. Today five stand inside the Acropolis Museum on a new balcony. However, one place remains empty. It belongs to Karyatid C taken by lord Elgin in 1803. She now stands in the British Museum.
