The owl, known as glaux in ancient Greek, was the symbol of the goddess Athena and an emblem of Athens, the city she protected. From the end of the sixth century BC, it is depicted on the back of the silver Athenian tetradrachm, known as the famous glaukes. The silver tetradrachm was classical antiquity's strongest coinage. The Acropolis Museum coin dates to the late fifth to the first half of the fourth century BC.
