The original plaque shows two painted gorgons, the mythical monsters, Stheno and Euryale, chasing the hero Perseus because he killed their sister Medusa. On the reverse side of the original plaque, there are painted panthers and deer. The plaque was dedicated to the Sanctuary of the Nymphe, protectress of Marriage on the south slope of the Acropolis around 580-570 BC.
