The Erechtheion, the most sacred of the temples on the Acropolis, was a complex building like no other temple in ancient Greece. Designed by the architect Mnesikles, it was constructed in the last twenty years of the fifth century BC. It is familiar to many because of its famous Karyatid statues that stood, in the place of columns, supporting the roof of the Sanctuary’s south porch. The costs of constructing the Erechtheion, which are provided in this inscription fragment, include the details of the individual payments paid to sculptors, the costs of materials, and information on the overall organization of the works.
