Five of the nine Maenads, followers of the god Dionysus, and the god adorn this both decorative and functional rectangular porcelain plate. The plate is inspired by the Dionysian scene on the ceramic lid of an early fourth century lekanis. The plate is supplied in a Maenad design gift box with an exhibit history. A smaller sized plate is also available with a Maenad detail.

The lekanis were luxurious shallow bowl-shaped containers with impressively decorated lids in which women placed their jewelry and cosmetics On the Acropolis Museum lid the god Dionysus, god of wine, intoxication and theater, is surrounded by nine Maenads, followers of the god, playing guitar, drums and clappers, drinking wine and dancing ecstatically. They are accompanied by a Satyr and five small winged Erotes or cupids, one of which plays the lyre.
