In democratic Athens, important decisions of the Ekklesia of the Demos, or 'Assembly of Citizens’ were carved on stone slabs and placed in much frequented public places such as the Acropolis. The slabs or stelai inscribed with the decisions were displayed in public places such as the Acropolis where they could be seen. This particular inscription records the privileges that Athens granted Samos, an island of the east Aegean, for their continued allegiance after Athens’ defeat by Sparta in 405 BC. Among the privileges was Athenian citizenship for Samians, considered the highest possible honor for a foreigner.
