The subject of this set of two plexiglas coasters draws inspiration from the famous marble relief of the Acropolis, the Relief of the Pensive Athena. With a contemporary design interpretation, the goddess is silkscreen printed on one coaster in red on a white background and in white on a red background on the second—functional items with a classical aesthetic.

The Relief of the Pensive Athena presents the goddess Athena, heavily draped in her robes in a restful or contemplative pose. She appears to look at the low stele that is shown to her left in the original work. What may have been carved on the stele has been variously interpreted to explain her unusual pose. Is it perhaps a list of treasures of the Sanctuary for which the stele was a boundary marker? Or, maybe it was a list of names of those that have fallen in war? It is considered that the latter may be the most consistent with the mood reflected in her pose.
