The Parthenon's construction began in 448-447 BC, an initiative of Pericles, the political leader of Athens. The plans were drawn up by the architects Iktinos and Kallikratis and the works were supervised by the famous sculptor Pheidias. With an unprecedented number of artisans and artists, the project was completed in just nine years. The temple's official inauguration took place in 438 BC during the celebrations of the Great Panathenaic Games. However, it took another six years for its sculptural decoration to be completed.
