The Parthenon was built to house the great gold and ivory statue of the goddess Athena, the exceptional creation of the sculptor Pheidias. Like many of the temple's architectural sculptures, the colossal statue was lost through the temple's many misadventures over time. Impressions of the temple’s appearance are provided by contemporary scholars such as Anastasios Orlandos. Orlando’s publication The Architecture of the Parthenon (1977) includes his reconstruction drawings of the temple, such as the west façade presented here. The drawing includes the pediment sculptures that show the mythical battle between Athena and Poseidon for the role of protector of the city of Athens.
