In the archaic period, a visitor to the ancient Acropolis would have confronted a view of over two hundred Korai of different sizes. All two hundred statues of young women fell victim to the Persians’ destructive attack that burnt the Acropolis to the ground in 480 BC. After the invaders’ departure, the Athenians buried the debris in cavities on the Rock, where they remained until coming to light during archaeological excavations in the nineteenth century. Their prolonged stay below ground was the reason for the preservation of the traces of their original colors. These include Kore 670s’ red lips and eyes, the colored patterns on her dress, the motifs on the wreath on her head and the dark-colored bracelet in the shape of a snake on her wrist.
