The Acropolis's Korai were marble statues of young women that wealthy Athenians would dedicate to the goddess Athena from the first decades of the 6th century BC. What the figures represent remains unknown, but many believe that the Peplos Kore represented the goddess Artemis, goddess of the hunt and that she once held a bow and arrow in her hands, now lost to us. She owes her name to the robe she wears, the peplos. The peplos was a heavy woolen garment that would fold over at its top, secured at the waist with a belt, and at the shoulders with bronze pins. The sculpture was originally painted with colorful motifs, traces of which can still be seen on the statue today.
