The loutrophoroi were vessels used to carry water for the bride and groom’s ritual cleansing bath that occurred on the eve of their wedding ceremony. The water would be taken from the sacred spring of Kalliroe that gushed from the banks of the River Ilissos. The tiny loutrophoroi were miniatures of the real vessels. They were frequently offered as dedications to the sanctuaries of gods, in this case to the Sanctuary of Nymph, the protectress of Marriage, in the late sixth to early fifth century BC. It is decorated with the black-figure technique, which constitutes the painting of dark forms on a reddish clay surface. It can be seen in display case 6 of the Museum’s gallery of the Acropolis Slopes.
