Block V of the west frieze, the original full size block of which is exhibited in the Museum’s Parthenon Gallery is reproduced here on a scale of 1:10. The west frieze of the Parthenon depicts the horsemen's preparations to take part in the procession of the Athenian people at the Panathenaic festival, honoring their patron goddess Athena. Block V of the western frieze presents two horse riders with their horses. The first still stands on the ground, barefoot, with his chlamys thrown on his back, holding the reins of his horse as it paces slowly. Originally, he would have held a bronze whip in his left hand, as indicated by the traces of the holes where it was attached. He faces the second horseman that wears a short chiton, gently galloping towards the left. The bridles and reins of the horses were originally depicted in copper and attached to the sculpture. The original was constructed between 442-438 BC. It is one of the series of the west frieze blocks produced by the Museum’s Conservation Workshops and its highly skilled craftspeople. These are the same people who care for and conserve the original exhibits in the Museum. Scaled reproductions of West frieze Block III and IV are also available.
