Block III of the Parthenon’s west frieze, the original block of which is exhibited in the Museum’s Parthenon Gallery is reproduced on a scale of one to ten. The west frieze of the Parthenon depicts the horseback riders preparing to take part in the Athenian peoples' procession, part of the celebrations of the Panathenaia, honoring the patron goddess Athena. In Block III, a horseman arranges his horse's reins while behind him stands a young servant. The young servant talks to a bearded master of ceremonies, who appears to give instructions with his outstretched hand. The horseman wears a chlamys and a wide-brimmed hat known as a petasos, cast on his back. The servant is naked while the master of ceremonies wears a himation covering the lower part of his body. The horse's bridle was made of copper and was originally attached to the holes still visible on the horses’ head. The original was made between 442-438 BC. It is one of a series of the west frieze blocks produced by the Museum’s Conservation Workshops and its highly skilled craftspeople: the same people who care for and conserve the original exhibits in the Museum. Scaled reproductions of West frieze Block IV and V are also available.
