Exact replica of a head of Athena made on a scale 1:1. The original was created in the late 5th century and is displayed in the Parthenon Gallery's atrium. It was a miniature rendition of the head from the monumental ivory and gold sculpture of Athena Parthenos, created by the sculptor Phidias to decorate the Parthenon's interior. Although Phidias masterpiece no longer exists, an impression of what it might have been like is preserved though ancient copies such as this one. The goddess is shown here wearing a helmet with a plume. The helmet designed by Phidias was, however, more elaborate. It had three plumes supported by mythical creatures: a sphinx in the middle and legendary winged horses, Pegasi, at the sides. This Museum replica produced exclusively for the Acropolis Museum Shops, is made with personal care and precision by the Acropolis Museum’s Conservation Workshops using the highest standard materials.
