The antefixes were architectural ornaments on the eaves of temples that concealed the ends of the roof's joint tiles. Apart from their decorative function, they also had a practical use as they prevented rainwater from entering, as well as the wind that could lift the tiles off the roof. One hundred and thirty marble antefixes on the two long sides of the Parthenon’s roof were made in the shape of an anthemion, a hybrid floral design of the leaves of acanthus and palm.
