Collection B of this series of ceramic reproductions of children’s toys includes a hydria (a water jug), knucklebones, marbles and a miniature dove. Suitable for use as ornaments and presented in a gift box. Three other collections of ceramic miniatures are available in this range.

As part of the three-day marriage ritual and on the eve of the wedding day, brides and grooms in ancient Athens would make dedications to the sanctuary of Nymphe, the protectress of Marriage and Wedding Ceremonies. These votives also included girls’ childhood toys offered by young Athenian women to the goddesses of Marriage before committing to the duties of a married woman. The originals date to the sixth century BC and can be seen in display case 6 of the Museum’s gallery of the Acropolis Slopes.
