The goddess is presented in the relief in an unusual pose. She leans on her spear, head bent and her right hand loosely on her hip. She has a thoughtful expression, and her glance is directed to a low stele. Was the stele a boundary marker for a sanctuary inscribed with a list of treasury objects or, perhaps, the names of those killed in a battle? Whichever, the relief remains one of the most sensitive portraits of Athena, the godly patron of Athens.
