The Parthenon frieze is that continuous band of sculpted marble blocks that wraps around the upper part of the temple, behind its external colonnade. It was sculpted between the years 442 and 438 BC and depicts the famous Panathenaic procession. The Panathenaia was the most important celebration of ancient Athens honoring the goddess Athena, culminating in a procession to the Erechtheion, another significant temple on the Acropolis. There the Athenians would offer a new robe for the statue of the goddess housed in the temple. The frieze's 160 meters presents 378 human and divine figures and more than 220 animals, mainly horses.
