The ancient Greeks used votive offerings to thank the gods for granting them a wish or to appeal to them for their assistance. The most distinctive offerings to the goddess Athena on the Acropolis were the Korai, the marble statues of young women with luxurious dresses and impressive jewelry that held an offering to the goddess in their hands. Exceptional amongst the Korai is the Peplos Kore, which owes her name to the garment she wears, the peplos. The dress is severe, different from most of the other Korai, and it is decorated with animals, birds, horse riders and other motifs. She is perhaps not just a Kore like the others, but Artemis, the goddess of hunting and instead of an offering, would have held a bow and arrow in her hands, now lost to us.
