The Korai, were expensive statues of young women commissioned by wealthy Athenians as dedications to the goddess Athena and placed in public view on the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis. Erected on high bases in the open air, they were intended to give joy to the goddess and social status to those who made the offering. Kore 682 is one of the largest Acropolis korai. Like many others, she wears a fine full body chiton and, over it, a short himation with rich folds. Her clothes were elaborately decorated with ornate motifs in red and blue. Her eyes would have been made of a glass material, now lost. She has sandals with platforms on her feet, a wreath on her head, earrings on her ears and a bracelet on her left wrist. Her long hair falls in waves on her back, and her distinctive ringlets fall on her chest, four on each side.
