Wealthy Athenians of the archaic period of the sixth to early 5th century BC, dedicated these expensive sculptures of young women, the Korai, to the sanctuary of the goddess Athena on the Acropolis. What they represent continues to remain unknown: goddesses, girls in the service of the Goddess Athena, or portraits of mortals? What is certain is that the Korai of the Acropolis embodied the ideal of the young woman of the period, which often participated in public celebrations and rituals.
