This famous marble relief of the Goddess Athena presents her in a rare pose, head bent, poised in either thought, sadness or merely pausing in rest. Today the marble of the relief is white. However, the surface of many sculptures of ancient Greece was painted in color as part of their original form, and it is now known the background of this marble plaque was blue.
