Three myrtle leaf wreaths encircle the names of three ancient Athenian Archons, rulers of the 1st century AD, etched in relief on a marble plaque. When the archons completed their terms successfully, the city-state would crown them with real myrtle leaf wreaths. The Archons would dedicate such marble plaques with their names engraved inside the depictions of their honorary wreaths, to the sacred cave of Apollo on the northwest side of the Acropolis.
