The akroteria were decorative architectural details on ancient temples. They were placed at the peaks and corners of the temple’s pediments and frequently took the form of anthemia, as did the central akroteria of the Parthenon. The anthemia were hybrid designs, usually based on a combination of the leaves of the acanthus plant and the palm. The lion head spouts at the four corners of the temple were purely decorative. The reconstruction of the central akroterion of the Parthenon in the Museum’s Parthenon gallery demonstrates its impressive size, which exceeded three meters.
