The Acropolis Museum has the most extensive collection of ceramic loutrophoroi, the special water carrying vessels with which the ancient Athenians carried water from the Kalliroe spring for the bride and groom’s ritual pre-wedding bath. The loutrophoroi are frequently decorated with scenes that present events from the three-day wedding rituals. This fragment of a red-figured loutrophoros of 420-410 BC shows a bride receiving gifts. At the same time, a little Eros or cupid hovers over her.
