Samos, an island of the east Aegean, remained steadfast in its loyalty to Athens even after Athens’ defeat by Sparta in 405 BC. The defeat signaled the end of the Peloponnesian War and the almost thirty-year conflict between those two powerful city-states and their allies. To honor Samos, Athens delivered three decrees in which they granted special privileges to the Samians, which were carved on a stone stele that was erected on the Acropolis. Today the stele can be seen on the first floor of the Museum, in the area displaying inscriptions relating to the foreign policy of ancient Athens.
