The Karyatids supported the south porch roof in place of columns of the temple known as the Erechtheion. Their abundant hair and detailed hairstyling were, apart from beautiful, also deliberate for their practical function, as they reinforced the weakest part of the statue, the neck, to bear the weight of the roof.
