The Karyatids acted as columns and supported the south porch of a temple on the Acropolis known as the Erechtheion. The Erechtheion was built to house the cult of Athena Polias and other gods and heroes, and the sacred markings that were regarded as ancient signs of a divine presence. The tombs of the mythical Athenian kings Kekrops and Erectheus, the latter from which the temple takes its name, are said to be buried within it. What the Karyatids represented remains unknown. Today many scholars believe that they were choephoroi, dedicants that offered libations, liquid offerings, to King Kekrops, whose tomb was located below in the Erechtheion.
