This famous marble relief of the Acropolis Museum presents the Goddess Athena with a helmet on her head, leaning on her spear. It is a work of the Severe Style that developed after the Persian Wars in 480 BC. This transitional period owes its name to the serious, almost severe expression that figures acquired after the abandonment of the ‘archaic smile’ seen earlier, for example, in the Korai sculptures. The Severe Style introduced greater movement and vitality in its forms and lasted until 450 BC, subsequently leading to the classical period.
