Hundreds of ceramic fragments from loutrophoroi were discovered during excavations at the sanctuary of the Nymphe, the patroness of Marriage. These were the ceramic water carrying vessels used for the ritual pre-wedding bath of the bride and groom on the eve of their marriage. They would subsequently dedicate the loutrophoros to the sanctuary on the south slopes of the Acropolis. On this fragment from such a vessel dated to 420-410 BC, we see a wedding scene: the bride in her new home, traditionally that of the groom's paternal family receives gifts from relatives and friends. A small Eros or cupid flies over her, a hint of the eroticism of the newlyweds' union.
