The Gigantomachy was the mythical battle of the Gods of Olympus with the terrifying Giants that challenged the gods’ supremacy. In the mythical battle that followed, Athena led the fight, defeating the Giant that personified the earthquake, known as Engelados. Her triumphant role was a favorite topic for Athenian artists that portrayed it in all its art forms. For the ancient Greeks, the victorious gods symbolized stability and order over the instability and chaos represented by the Giants.
