The sacred bird, and emblem of the city of the goddess Athena, the owl, is depicted on the rear of the Athenian tetradrachm from the late sixth century BC. This particular coin in the Museum’s collection was found during archaeological excavations on the Makrigianni site on which the Museum was constructed. The owl in relief on the tetradrachm, is framed by an olive branch and the inscription ΑΘΕ, which means ‘Athenian’. It is dated to the late fifth to the beginning of the fourth century BC.
